Ski School

Ski Bums

A physics skiing party game where each stick is one of your legs. Race up to 30 people down one mountain, on snow that fights back.

The game

Skiing, the hard way. Together.

Real skiing physics, turned into a party. Steer each ski on its own, feel the snow change under you, and try to stay upright while 29 other people do the same.

The Ski Bums way

One stick per leg

Left stick, left ski. Right stick, right ski. A trigger leans your body into the turn and both together tuck. Carve, skate across the flats or tumble: it all comes out of the physics, nothing is scripted. It's how the game is meant to be skied, and once it clicks, you're skiing.

  • Two Legs is the default on a controller
  • New to it? Five other schemes, from Classic to phone tilt, run on the same physics (below)

The party

Thirty on the hill

Everyone starts together and everyone is on the slope at once. The leaders get the fresh snow; the rest of the field skis what they leave behind.

  • Up to 30 skiers per race
  • Mass starts, then a head-to-head final

The events

Four ways to race

A round is a run of events on different slopes, ending in a final.

  • Banner Slalom / Giant SlalomMass start through wide banner gates. Miss one and it costs you time.
  • Switch PointsYou only score while skiing backwards, and more at speed.
  • Speed LimitFirst to the bottom without going over 45 km/h. Go over and you're out.
  • Parallel SlalomThe final: two courses side by side, head to head.

The mountain

The Sierra del Atlas

A whole mountain of runs above the village of Atlas Station, with chairlifts, a flow park to carve and races by day, at golden hour and under floodlights.

  • Make your skier and dress them for the slopes
  • The shop is cosmetics only: nothing pay-to-win

Controls

Play your way

Two Legs is the heart of Ski Bums, but it isn't the only way in. There are six control schemes in all, from the full two-leg technique to just tilting your phone, and every one drives the same legs on the same physics. So friends of every level can race the same mountain, and you can move up to Two Legs when you're ready.

With a controller 3 schemes

The full technique

Two Legs

The Ski Bums way: each stick is a leg.

How it works
  • Left stick is your left leg, right stick your right leg.
  • Push a stick sideways to roll that ski onto its edge and carve; forward presses the boot.
  • LT / RT lean the upper body; both together tuck (and pole when slow).
  • Both sticks back and to one side: hockey stop. Stride the sticks out in turn to skate.
Played ski games before

Classic

Like most ski games: one stick steers.

How it works
  • Left stick steers both skis together; push it forward to press into the turn.
  • Right stick leans the body. RT tucks (poles when slow).
  • LT brakes: a hockey stop to the side you last steered.
  • Tap A to skate, one stride per tap.
Steer with your feet

Pedals

The triggers are your feet. Squeeze the way you want to go.

How it works
  • Squeeze LT (left foot) to turn left, RT (right foot) to turn right: the harder, the tighter.
  • Ease off to straighten up; squeeze the other one to link turns.
  • Left stick presses the boots and fine-tunes the steer; right stick leans.
  • Both triggers hard: tuck (poles when slow). A trigger held with the left stick pulled back: hockey stop.

On a phone 3 schemes · in development

Two Legs on glass

Thumbs

Two Legs on glass: a thumbstick for each leg.

How it works
  • Put a thumb down anywhere on the left half: that's your left leg's stick. The right half is your right leg.
  • Slide a thumb sideways to roll that ski onto its edge and carve; up presses the boot.
  • Top corners lean you left and right; hold both to tuck (and pole when slow).
  • Both thumbs back and to one side: hockey stop. Stride the thumbs out in turn to skate.
Thumbs, plus tilt

Thumbs + Tilt

A thumbstick for each leg; tilt the phone to lean.

How it works
  • A thumbstick for each leg, as in Thumbs.
  • Tilt the phone left or right to lean your upper body.
  • Hold both top corners to tuck (and pole when slow).
  • However you hold the phone at the start is level.
The easy one

Tilt

Just tilt the phone. The easy one.

How it works
  • Tilt the phone left or right like a steering wheel: both skis edge and carve that way.
  • Tip the top away from you to press into the turn; toward you to ease off, further to stop.
  • Two fingers anywhere on the screen: tuck (and pole when slow).
  • However you hold the phone at the start is level.

Every scheme drives the same two legs and the same physics; only how your hands talk to them changes. Switch any time from the pause menu.

The snow report

The snow is the star

Five kinds of snow, each skiing differently. You feel every one through your legs.

Hardpack

Grippy

Groomed corduroy. Grips cleanly and carves, until you ask too much and the edge lets go.

Ice

Fast and scary

It only holds on a hard edge. Lose it and it's hard to get back.

Powder

Floaty

Knee deep when you're slow. Sit back or it pitches you forward.

Crud

Lumpy

Powder that's been skied. Bumpy, slow, and it knocks your skis about.

Slush

Grabby

Sticky and wet. Hit it fast and it throws you forward.

And it changes under you. Skis chop fresh powder into crud, skids scrape the piste down to ice, and bumps build up where everyone turns. The last skier down never gets the same run as the first.

No kickers. No flips. No tricks.
Just you, two legs and the snow.

Every turn, skid and wipeout comes out of the physics. It's harder than it looks and funnier than it should be.

From the mountain

Real gameplay

Recorded by the game itself, every day, on its own. No mock-ups.

Questions

Good to know

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Ski Bums is free to play. The shop sells cosmetics for Ski Bucks, and nothing in it makes you faster.

What do I need to play?

On a computer, a controller: the game is built around two analogue sticks, so there's no keyboard or mouse. It comes with three controller schemes, from the full two-leg technique to Classic, where one stick steers like in other ski games. Phones get three touch and tilt schemes, which are in development.

How do the playtests work?

Sign up with your email. When there's a place for you we'll email you with how to join, and you'll race online with up to 30 other skiers.

Are there jumps or tricks?

No, on purpose. No kickers, no flips: just skiing, and the snow is the challenge.

What happens to my email?

We only use it to invite you to playtests. We never sell or share it, and you can take it off the list at any time.
